When I go for any type of rail I approach it from the side that's going to be facing up-rail. Example: I am left foot forward...frontside boardslide, I approach from left of jump...backside boardslide from the right...50-50, straight on...does that help? I do it that way simply because it's more comfortable and there's less of a rotation necessary to make the move. However, having said that, it looks way more stylee in my opinion if you approach form the opposite side of the rail (frontside, come from the right, etc.)...hope that helps...peace!

NOT even close to being a good boarder here....lol. But what I've seen, heard or tried myself........catching the edge from time to time will eventually wear out the edge and some people actually dull the edges with a file or something to keep from catching. never heard or seen of an edge yet that has split away from the board itself. As for 50-50 to boardslide.....it was a lot easier for me to start that way than to just hop on the rail boardslide. I've broken my ass a few times trying it that way, but I guess that was better than a chin :P. But i do envy those that can hop on there boardslide first....that would be sweet for me to just nail one this season and not break something :D

boardslides, do dull your edges a significant ammount, however they will not ruin them unless you do something stupid and hit the rail hard enough to dent them, but make sure that you dont nald on rails to hard or do huge gaps as is can lead to your core seperating and you rail literally falling off.
but for a frontside boardslide, i learned them starting 50 50 and going into it just to get the feel of them before commiting to one. now the way i do them is appriach from my left side, or your right side if you are goofy, and try to place my front on the rail. then when i am on the rail i can shitf my weird to center my board more. it gives you a gradual lean into it so that you dont jam your board into the rail and catch an edge and fall. always remember to keep you shoulders open frontward and dont turs darkside and look straight up the hill, otherwise you will fall on ur face.
good luck man, peace

I don't know if it dulls your edges, and I dunno if its easier to start in a 50-50 into the boardslide, I see a lot of people try it that way though. But I always just hop onto it and turn in the air and land in a boardslide, it just seems easier for me, and in my opinion it looks cooler and like your a little better. Plus, I don't really like 50-50's at all.

no need to dull your edges because all you have to do is lean slightly in the direction up the rail... so on a backside boardslide lean more towards your heel edge and on a frontside lean more to your toe edge...

When you want to go and hit a boardslide your gonna want to ride in striaght i.e. like a 50/50. One you come of the ramp coping turn your shoulders and and either put your board in a fs or a bs.
for your edges, doing a boardslide wont hurt your edging at all. That is as long as you dont try stoping or caving on the rail

would a faster speed help thru boardslides? I can do 50-50s easy now.....and I have been practicing on doing them with even more speed. but was think that even if your edge does catch just a hair.....will going faster just get you thru more likely?

Okay good to know. I was thinking of filing my edges down. In that "Jibbing with Jeremy Jones" video he shows you and recommends filing down the edges for a jib board, but I just dropped my board off to get it waxed/sharpened for the season. Hopefully, the edges won't be a huge factor in jib crashes (boardslides).
I got bored or doing the normal boardslides and lip slides.. so I decided to try spinning around while boardsliding. I think it's called a 270 Lipslide or something. Now that's pretty hard. I managed a concussion from looping out doing one once.

Well, like previously stated, you just need to turn a 90 and ride. But about coming off the rail. If you want to go to fakie, then don't look back, and your board will just spin for you. If you want to go back to regular, then look back and you should stay regulaer.

Actually it would be called a 270 boardspin, a lip slide is when you do a boardslide but you bring your tail over the raill. I think I know what you are talking about, unless you mean a 270 before you get on the rail, that would just be a BS 270 boardslide or a FS 270 frontboardslide.
And they aren't that hard, you just need to throw your shoulders and you should continue to spin.
Tip: Do not try it on a short rail...not a good idea.
A boardslide is where you spin in the air - otherwise it would be a 50-50 to boardslide. Just to clear any confusion if anyone has it Frontside Boardslide is where you are going backwards on the rail. It is harder because you can't see where you are going. Backside is facing forward, the easier of the two.
Executive, where do you live in MI and what mountains do you usually go to. I snowboard in Michigan alot.

Pine knob and alpine valley, those are my local hills, but i go to nub's a lot.
when you are doing a front board you can look back and still be riding backwards.
Thats a long ways away from where I am. I usually go to the UP.
I got a tip for frontside boardslides too.
-look over your shoulder, not under it. I would always look under my shoulder leaning too far uphill and falling. Looking over my shoulder fixed that problem and now I can frontside pretty good. (don't lean to far back though)
