I got lucky this season at Temple Basin, plenty of snow and barely anyone around to get in the way of my mate and me.... but the legs were not ready.. Whats good to do pre season to them in shape for all day riding?

i recomend jogging, it's also good for your heart. But you can always do the step exercise where you either go up and down an elevated surface by stepping up and down it, or you could run up and down stairs... also, you kneel down, stand up, kneel down, stand up over and over again. So yeah, there are plenty of things you can do to improve the muscles in your legs for boarding. The stairs work the muslces you'll be boarding with the best. I personally don't need anything as I'm forced to do plenty of exercise in my gym class, keeps me quite fit surprisingly.

Joggers disgust me. and i disagree about the stairs thing... when ur runing up and down stairs u spring off ur back leg useing mostly ur calf, and in boarding u don't move your foot that much, its more of a leen... sqauts would do it though. OR just wait for season to start, after a couple hard long days you'll be back to what you were

I ride motocross,

Some of you wont know this but when rideing motocross you stand a lot and then sit down and then squat with legs bent some of the time. Also it helps with getting used to flying in the air.

Now when I snowboard I hardly ever get tired.

Now you might say ya motocross has a engine how can it help your legs?

Well studys do show that rideing motocross for 1 hour is more of a work out than any other sport (Think that is what I read)

BUT, motocross is not cheap $$$, so this post might not help at all.

Weight training is good ... squats for your quads, lunges for your quads and hamstrings, calf raises, sideways lunges to work out the muscles on your hips, toe raises to work out the muscle on the front of your shin... even if you don't "directly" use those muscles, the better overall shape your legs are in the better off you're going to be.

For endurance, running is where it's at. If you don't like running, try mountain biking.... great for building strength AND endurance.

Also, make sure you work out your "core" muscles like your abs and lower back. Helps a lot.

Big huge DITTO! The first time I boarded w/ my friends I had been doing weight training for years - they were all very sore in their quads and I didn't feel a thing.

Any cardio machine is good for endurance as long as you work hard and sweat your butt off for more than 30 minutes at a time.

I do squats in the gym wednesdays. Nice and heavy, about 30 minutes worth.
Monday & Friday I use the stairmaster. I set the machine to a preprogrammed workout that varies the workload/muscle group.

To avoid sore muscles I go to GNC and buy "Cell Protector®". I have NEVER been sore after a hard workout if I take two of those pills in the morning, 2 after the workout (just before lunch), and 2 during dinner.

The only times I do get sore: if I decide to have several beers in the evening of a workout day.

there is no way that one hour of motocross is more then any other sport. think of those crazy runners or what about a road biker or a mountain biker, they do the same thing as you and they have to pedal their bike too.

yeah, but think of how much stregth it takes to move around (also while in air) an extremly heavy bike....if I remember correctly its over 100 lbs. ....That would take some strength

van_Drecht

in not saying it wouldnt, he said that is was " more of a work out than any other sport" what do you think is harder Sprinting for an hour( 100% Sprint not some lame ass jog) or rideing motocross

someloser*rider

you dont sprint for an hour....

Ok first off, I ride a YZF250f and dry weight (No gas) is 220 pounds, and add some gas and oil it's around 235 or more. That’s no easy thing to lug around in the air over 100ft jumps.

Second, had to put this in I WENT TO COPPER MOUTAINE TODAY!!! no jumps up yet but hey any time I get to board I'm happy.

Third, yes those pros and people that are REALLY into running and biking get a better workout because that’s what they do for a long time everyday. Now think about it would you go and bike like they do for 1 HOUR just to go snowboarding? Ouch that would be a pain in the legs.

I also believe that its important to add exercises to your every day...

1) take the stairs, not the elevator
2) I jump down stairs a lot and when I land I let the squat absorb the energy; legs parallel, bent at the knees (colleagues at work think I'm weird when I do that. LOL!)
3) great tip: when you go to the toilet for a #2, do NOT sit on the seat at all costs... instead, hover above the seat in the squatting position. At first its a leg killer...

AHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAAHA I took the advice of #3, and I now want to ask you if you want to make a workout program using this.... Squatting for 5 mins is kind or hard.

I'm really pissed right now because I can't find any good way this year to get up to the slopes : ( And all I can think about is snowboarding DANG!

Its a real leg killer. I wouldn't call it a workout program... its just one of those add-on behaviours to make sure the legs are everything they can be.

I thought of this a long time ago... but I recently heard on the radio (NPR) that western women can't squat like women in japan, etc., because of the toilet seat. They've simply lost the necessary muscles.

WALL SITS!!!

lean with your back on a wall. slide down to a sitting position, like you are in a chair. I bet you won't last more than 2 minutes.

Rinse and repeat for desired results.

It takes practice and a load of pain but I got up to 40 minutes, legs at 90 degree angles. Kills, really kills. They're called 'ski squats' - I reckon its the kind of position you want to be over a skier (to give them a 'gift'), which is why they called it that. :D ;)

I reckon cycling is the most suitable for mountain sports. Its cardiovascular and builds up strength and stamina in the legs, so you should be able to ride the whole day pain free. I'll let you know whether it works, I'm trying to get out on my bike every day (and got very wet today doing so :( )

Snowman, Crunches.... The mussels in the front will help back be supported better. Also might want to get one of those ball things and lay backwards on that I find it helps me.

Back extensions and "Supermans" work well. For back extensions most gyms will have a device that is at a 45" angle... you put the front of your thighs/pelvic bone on the pads, place your heels against some braces, and you will be at a 45 degree angle looking downwards. Place arms across chest, then slowly lean forward until your head is close to the ground, then slowly raise your torso until it is aligned with your legs. Repeat until tired. If you find this too easy add a 10 or 25 lb weight and hold it with your arms.

Supermans - lay on your stomach on a flat bench, with the upper part of your torso hanging over one end. Your legs should also be up on the bench, feet together. Now pretend you're Superman flying, holding your arms out straight in front of you and keeping your back straight. This one will kill you. Do it until a nice pool of sweat forms on the ground, right underneath your face.

No clue why becuase it's not that funny.... yet it is, I guess it's so funny coming out of her mouth (Or hands) and not one of my sick freinds. (not calling it a sick comment or anything)
